OUT OF ENERGY Error on TRON: What It Means and How to Fix It

Your USDT TRC-20 transaction failed with OUT OF ENERGY? Here are the causes, how to check them in TRONSCAN, and safe ways to retry the transfer.

TronLess Team ·

The OUT OF ENERGY error means the transaction ran out of available computational resource while the smart contract was executing. It shows up most often on USDT TRC-20 transfers, when the address lacks Energy or does not allow enough TRX to cover the shortfall.

Do not immediately resend the same transaction. Establish the cause first: the failed attempt may already have consumed part of your Energy or TRX.

Why OUT OF ENERGY appears

The main causes:

The error concerns the execution of the transaction on-chain, not the USDT balance itself. A wallet can hold plenty of tokens and still fail to complete a transfer without the network resource.

Is a fee charged on a failed transaction

Yes, that is possible. TRON nodes had already executed the smart contract's instructions up to the point where it stopped, so the computational resources consumed are not necessarily returned.

The recipient will not receive USDT, but the sender can lose the Energy spent or part of their TRX. This is one reason not to repeat the operation without checking first.

How to diagnose it in TRONSCAN

  1. Copy the TXID of the failed transaction from your wallet.
  2. Open TRONSCAN and paste the TXID into the search.
  3. Check the operation status and the error message.
  4. Look at Energy Usage, Energy Fee, Net Usage and Fee Limit.
  5. Confirm the recipient address and the token contract are correct.

If Energy Usage came close to the available limit and the result contains OUT_OF_ENERGY, you need to raise either the available resource or the permitted spending cap before retrying.

How to fix OUT OF ENERGY

Step 1. Do not retry automatically

Save the TXID and confirm the transaction really did fail. Do not go by the wallet notification alone: the on-chain status is the source of truth.

Step 2. Check the receiving address

Find out whether the address is activated and whether it holds USDT. A transfer to an address with a zero token balance can require more Energy.

Step 3. Check the sender's resource

Energy has to sit on the address that signs and sends the transaction. Resource delegated to the recipient, or to another wallet of yours, will not pay for this contract call.

Step 4. Obtain enough Energy

You can stake TRX, receive a delegation, or rent Energy; renting versus burning TRX compares what each costs. A standard transfer often uses around 65,000 Energy as a guide, and a heavier scenario around 131,000. Check the live estimate before retrying.

Step 5. Check the fee limit

fee_limit caps the maximum TRX allowed for executing the contract. If your wallet lets you change this parameter, do not guess at a value: too low a limit will halt the operation, while an excessively high one raises the maximum spend you have authorised.

Step 6. Retry the transaction once

Once the Energy has arrived, refresh the wallet data, rebuild the transfer and check the address, network and amount. Then send the new transaction.

How OUT OF ENERGY differs from a TRX shortage

A message about an insufficient TRX balance usually means the wallet determined before sending that there are not enough funds to cover the fee. OUT_OF_ENERGY more often appears during smart contract execution, when the computational resource limit has been exhausted.

Both come down to resources, but diagnosing by TXID is what tells you the exact cause.

How to avoid the error in future

Renting Energy through TronLess

TronLess lets you get Energy to the address you need without staking TRX yourself. Enter the sending address, choose the amount and wait for the delegation to be confirmed. Then repeat the transfer in your wallet.

The service needs no access to your USDT, your seed phrase or your private key.

Get Energy at TronLess and remove the cause of OUT OF ENERGY before you retry.

Frequently asked questions

Will my USDT come back after an OUT OF ENERGY error?

When a transaction fails, the token balance change is normally rolled back and the USDT stays with the sender. Always confirm the final status by TXID.

Is the spent Energy returned?

Resources already consumed by the computation are not necessarily returned, even when the USDT transfer did not complete.

Will simply topping up TRX help?

Topping up can let the network pay the resource shortfall by burning TRX. Renting Energy is often used as the cheaper alternative, but weigh both against current pricing.

Why was 65,000 Energy not enough?

The operation may have needed more because of the receiving address state or how the contract executed. 65,000 is a guide, not a guaranteed ceiling.
